Principal’s Memo – February 16, 2024

Posted on

February 16, 2024

Good morning LMS Families,

We have made it to February Vacation, and we now have some snow to help us welcome it. I hope you all have some wonderful plans to spend with your children while they have a chance to rest and relax as we take a break from the school day routine. Whether you’re traveling afar, or closer to home, or experiencing a staycation, all of us at Loranger hope you enjoy it.

There will be no memo next week due to the vacation, so the next memo will be on Friday, March 1st. Some important dates to remind you of as we return from vacation and turn the calendar to March:
● Trimester 2 ends on March 8th
● Spring Parent Teacher Conferences are March 14th and the 20th. Sign up information will be out after vacation.

Summer vacation may be tough to plan for today, but Oakhurst and YMCA have asked that I share their summer camp opportunity. You can read more about that in the flyer at the end of this memo.

Large LMS and OOB Thank You to Mt. Abram

Yesterday our fifth graders had the amazing opportunity to experience some downhill skiing over at Mt. Abram. All of our students did a fantastic job, but none of it would have been possible without the amazing group of staff and volunteers from Mt. Abram. We are so thankful for all that they did to make this happen. Thank you Mt. Abram!

Food Pantry Information

If your family would like to receive weekly food bags sent home with your child, please contact our School Counselor, Judy Milligan at jmilligan@rsu23.org or by calling 934-4848. We have received a contract with The Good Shepherd Food Bank with a sponsor of Youth Full Maine to provide food for our pantry. We receive food from these organizations every other week. We also receive donations from the Old Orchard Beach Food Pantry and private citizens in our community. The food we receive varies with each delivery however all food is nonperishable. You are also welcome to pick up the food yourself by letting Mrs. Milligan know that you need a food bag left either at the front office or left outside for a no-contact pick-up. A bag can be packed for you any day just by asking.

Upcoming Drama Performance

The OOB Drama Club presents The Grimm Fairy Tale Spectaculathon – Friday, March 8th at 6 p.m. in the LMS Gym. The Drama Club is made of students from both our high school and middle school who all look forward to sharing their performance with you.

Student Chromebooks

We are seeing a high number of students who are forgetting to bring their chromebook to school, and/or not charged and ready for the day. This creates a lot of problems, number one is their inability to access their education. While we are doing everything we can to supply those students with a device for the day, our supply is limited, and with the amount of students forgetting their devices or having them uncharged, some days we are loaning out our entire stock. Please help us by reminding your child to bring their device every day. Thank you for your partnership with this.

Student Medication Procedure

Students may require medications for various reasons throughout the school day, this includes over the counter medications, prescribed medications and emergency medications. Per school policy all medications at school need parent permission, doctors orders and to be administered by the nurse or trained personnel. Medications are stored in the nurse’s office and the student’s parent shall deliver medication needed for school. The intent of this policy is to promote safe administration of medications to students and a safe environment for all our students.

Snow/Remote Day Information

Please see the snow/remote day memo sent out by Superintendent Suttie.

Arrival & Dismissal Safety Procedures

I would like to remind everyone that for the safety of our students and staff the back side of our building including our parking lot is not a thruway. We have seen an increase in the number of vehicles using this as a cut through from Jameson Hill Road to Emerson Cummings Blvd and vice versa. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this in order to keep our students safe!

Family Vacation Forms

During the school year some families take vacations and ask that we excuse their children from school days. This is not a problem, however, we do have forms to sign off on in order to help students understand the expectations of making up missed work. The forms can be found in the main office. Thanks for your help!

A reminder of a few upcoming dates:

  • Monday 2/19-Friday 2/23 – February Break
  • Wednesday 3/6 – Early Release Day
  • Friday 3/8 OOBHS/LMS Drama Performance
  • Monday 3/11 – Start of Trimester 3
  • Thursday 3/14 – Parent Teacher Conferences
  • Wednesday 3/20 – Parent Teacher Conferences
  • Thursday 3/21 – RSU 23 School Board Meeting
  • Wednesday 4/3 – Early Release Day
  • Friday 4/12-Friday 4/19 – April Break

Have a safe and amazing vacation,

Good morning LMS Families,

One week of school until February vacation which takes place February 19th-23rd. We hope you have some amazing plans with your family and can rest and recharge for the February to April stretch. March happens the week we return, and there are some very important dates on the calendar for March. Trimester 2 will end on Friday, March 8th, and digital report cards will be sent the following week. As we approach the end of the Trimester, if you have any questions for your child’s teacher you can find their email address on our website under the Faculty & Staff Tab. If you’d rather wait and talk in person, Spring Parent Teacher Conferences happen on March 14th and 20th. We’ll share sign up information as those dates get closer. And even farther out on the calendar is summer vacation. Oakhurst and YMCA have asked that I share their summer camp opportunity that you read more about in the flyer at the end of this memo.

Our Food Services Department is hiring a Kitchen Attendant at Loranger Memorial School from now through the end of this school year. This position is 5 hours a day, 8:30-1:30 on school days only, so you won’t miss any time with your kids! If you’re interested, please apply here.

Healthy Snacks for Celebrations

With Valentine’s day on it’s way, it is a great time to remind everyone that we do have a district wellness policy that addresses healthy snacks for celebrations and events. We ask that any time you are thinking about sending in food for celebrations you check with your child’s teacher who will work with administration to ensure that our celebrations are in line with our district policy. We ask that you do not send in any food without prior approval as we do have students and staff who have allergies. Thank you.

Per school policy all medications at school need parent permission, doctors orders and to be administered by the nurse or trained personnel. RSU 23 Health Team Note on cold & flu season

As we head into these winter months, this is a quick reminder to be mindful of cold and flu season. It is important that we work together to keep our children healthy. Viruses/Common Colds spread easily among children in schools. You can help prevent the spread of flu and the common cold by following a few simple steps:

  • Remind your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. We teach them to cough or sneeze into a tissue, the bend of their elbow, or to cough down into the front of their own shirt to help keep as many germs as possible off of the hands.
  • Have your child wash his/her hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available.
  • If your child is sick and has a fever, keep him/her at home to prevent the spread of illness to others.

Contact our school nurse, Katie Gagnon, at kgagnon@rsu23.org with any questions or if your child will be absent from school due to illness.

Happy Friday LMS Families,

What a strange week of weather we have had. Winter is certainly here! I want to send out a big thank you to our RSU23 PTO/Boosters who hosted a grades 3-5 after school fun fair this past Wednesday. We had a great turn out and students had an amazing time with all the different games and activities that were planned. Thanks to the boosters, as well as to Old Orchard Beach Recreation who also assisted.

Principal’s Memo – January 19, 2024

Posted on

January 19, 2024

Good morning LMS Families,

Happy Friday. This has been a topsy turvy week here, with Monday off, and then the early dismissal for weather on Tuesday. Now we’re seeing real winter temperatures come in. With these temps and the recent snowfall, it’s a good opportunity to remind you that appropriate attire is necessary for our students as they are spending time outside for recess, as well as for a break time. For our grade 3-5 students they need to wear boots, snow pants, coats, hats, and mittens or gloves outside at recess to play in the snow. If you are in need of some of these winter clothing items, you can reach out to our school counselor, Ms. Milligan who will be happy to assist you. The colder temperatures can also mean more time inside, which can lead to more recreational screen time for our students. Please see the document at the end of this memo for some social media safety tips, brought to you by the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the American Psychological Association.

Student Chromebooks

We are seeing a high number of students who are forgetting to bring their chromebook to school, and/or not charged and ready for the day. Principal’s Memo – January 5, 2024

Posted on

January 5, 2024

Happy New Year LMS Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays and the vacation. It was great to get some time off, but I think we are all glad to get back into the school routine this week. Even though the calendar has changed to 2024, the level of expectations and rigor here at LMS remain consistent. Staff and students are working hard to pick right up from the teaching and learning that was happening before break. We’re looking forward to what 2024 will bring here at LMS. Here are this week’s announcements.

Outdoor Gear Reminder

It is important to know that appropriate attire is necessary for our students as they are spending time outside for recess, and also sometimes for a break.
